About The Artwork

If motherhood took a form, what would it look like? Femininity, compassion, resilience. Traits that are all too familiar to us yet ones we fail to fully appreciate, would materialise into a scaffold of safeguarding flora that nurtures us, protects us, and consoles us. The backdrop of flowers in this painting that encircles the central rose is arranged in a pattern that resembles the landforms of earth as an allusion to “Gaia”, the personified earth and mother of all life. The surrounding non-reflective water illustrates the one-sided relationship man has with nature (or child with mother), making the viewers wonder whether the motherly love that has been gently dissolved in the water will be reciprocated and resurface as gratitude. The subjects are confined within a closed system that is under the surveillance of a mother-like awareness. This work depicts the interconnectedness between the coactors in our ecosystem, and highlights the essentiality of a balance between nurturance and autonomy within any kind of relationships.

In my work I like to tell stories. Whether they be inspired from conversations with friends, my own experiences, or fragments from the news, I like to rewrite them in my own words and capture them as a painting. I often incorporate flowers into my art as they help me portray a myriad of social issues depending on the context of the painting and to further highlight on the fragility and transience of life. My artistic style is fluid with frequent use of rich colours, creating an illusionary image that looks beautiful from a distance. But nothing is perfect from close-up. By introducing subtle contravening factors, I like to call attention to urgent social themes that preoccupies the minds of many people and voice the collective troubles of the modern world.
