George Stinney was unjustly executed in 1944 at age 14. A native of Alcolu, South Carolina, he was the youngest person to be executed in the U.S. in the 20th century. Falsely accused of the murder of two little white girls he was exonerated in 2014 seventy years after he was put to death. Hopefully, people will come away from this painting feeling compassion for the "falsely accused." Most of my paintings are in oil because I love the flexibility of the medium. I chose George Stinney as my subject matter because I wanted to tell his story from the eyes of an artist. I painted George in Paynes Grey to emphasize "the darkness of his fate." The yellow bird is a Finch found in South Carolina. The red flower is a Maypop (which played a part in George's death). The green bulb is a Maypop before it blooms.
