About The Artwork

The ungainly four-legged creature represents unregulated industry moving across our world, polluting our environment. The tangled burden of manufacturing equipment on the creature’s back provides energy for its movement as well as being the source of the pollution that has so obviously marred the surrounding environment. The industrial structures that crowd the distant waterfront are grimy and unappealing, resulting from the creature’s impact. The sickly ocher-colored waters beneath him would be incapable of sustaining the life of a single minnow. No bird could fly through the ghastly pall of that sky over his head. The ghostly pallor of the moon could never inspire lovers to poetry or fond embraces. The ungainly legs of the creature are obviously incapable of efficient movement, reflecting the clumsy nature of much of our military-industry complex that seems better at destroying than enriching our lives. The creature has a human face. The often-dolorous condition of our planet is not something that has happened to us; it is something that we are doing. We have brought it on ourselves.
