About The Artwork

The restless Ionian sea breaks onto the rocks of the coast of Puglia, whilst light plays upon its surface at the horizon. The distinct relationship between sky and sea translates to an interchange between light and dark, creating depth and a sense of wonder at their meeting. The waves' restless agitation is explored through painterly mixed media, combining mark making with paint and pencil, the end of the brush and glaze over impasto. The colour palette is limited, distilling the scene into a composition between these simplified values.
