Jetty Print

“Jetty” is a work meant to question the dichotomies between the natural and artificial, the impact of human activity on the environment. The core image is based on a real moment, a glimpse captured by me during a most ambiguous time. This was later worked out into the final composition as the painting itself progressed and the various elements were arranged on the canvas itself, always keeping a consideration to the minimal nature of the visual aspect of the image, in an attempt to keep it as clean as possible in order not to interfere with the strength of the message that is being conveyed. My intention is to impress on the viewer the sensation of being in the presence of a very secular and particular moment or event. The action here represented is ceremonial and hermetic, as all rituals are meant to be. It does not propose any form of literal interpretation, but merely the absorption into the mood that the entirety of the set conveys. Variations between natural and man-made structures are present here in a dialogue that leaves room for questions on the influence of our species in the natural order. This painting does not provide answers to these, merely imposes on the observer the need to be faced with such dilemmas in a personal and subjective manner. It’s a piece that relies greatly on the application of precise technical skills, and yet leaves enough room for the exploration of certain, more expressive, deviations from the traditional, in a constant search for new ways to represent the human figure as well as the landscape elements, in the most efficient way. Here we find a rather interesting contrast between a controlled brush application of paint, and a more loose and gestural approach when it justifies that freedom of movement.
