This watercolor painting depicts a motif from a pillar in the Kavi Darbar in the Gurudwara Paonta Sahib. This floral motif was set into the marble pillar through inlay work. The Gurudwara was built in the memory of the tenth and last Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh ji. Kavi Darbar translates literally to “Poets’ Court,” and was a gathering hall where poets (“Kavis”) engaged in poetry recitations. Guru Gobind Singh was is famous for his love of poetry. As per Sikh tradition, every month on a full moon night, he used to arrange such the gathering of poets in a court on the banks of the River Yamuna. Inlay mosaics in Gurdwaras were influenced by Mughal work imported from Iran. This is evident when compared to the floral designs set into the marble of the Taj Mahal
