The several species of the genus Kinixys are found across much of tropical and sub-tropical sub-Saharan Africa. Kinixys are commonly known as the hinge-back tortoise : on the back of its shell, the tortoise has a 90 degree hinge which, when closed, can protect its rear legs and tail from predators.
