This figure completes this series of four ‘long coloured legs’ paintings. The young woman that formed the basis of this work was part of a group of young students at the National Gallery London. The patterned dress is as near as I can remember, the tights were worn by another student and were pale yellow and patterned. But like other paintings based on remembrances and visual montage, I feel free to take liberties. However, it was the east African (Somali? Ethiopian?) long striking face of some of the students and very dark complexion that interested me, this allied to the coloured clothing and patterned elements was what I wanted to express in this painting. Superior Rolled Canvas board has been used and applied with layers of acrylic Rowney colours, both opaque and washes to get the finish I want. The canvas board has a base wash of Burnt Orange pigment, the subject foundation consists of opaque pigments generally applied in colour blocks with subsequent layers of colour washes. The washes are made with acrylic pigment, professional airbrush medium (this is necessary to bind the pigment) and finally water. This layering of the work with washes allows for subtle tonal attributes that give depth and intensity, especially in the flesh tones. The overall result is a painting with a visual ‘malleable texture’ that has eliminated unnecessary hard detail.

United Kingdom
Born in Gloucester and living and working in Cheltenham UK. I like to work in acrylic because it allows me to experiment, making changes quickly is paramount when wishing to explore your options. I suspect like most figurative artists I find drawing and painting the human form wholly embedded with human behaviour. The desire to secure more than a representation of a persons movement, the spilling of light over contours or the various other physical facets is the reason we continue to make paintings. To recast emotions in texture, colour and pattern and to make it still, perhaps this is a measure of a successful painting. I have sold work around the world, to individuals and organisations and have produced award winning public art (usually with a colleague) for various institutions.
