The subject of this piece is the Indian god- Ganesha. I worked on this piece during his festival in September as it reminded me of the auspicious time, celebration and at the same time disappointing part of it that is carried out when the festival ends. The festival involves statues of Ganesha made from plaster of Paris, which are seen in homes and communities during this 12-day festival to worship the god. At the end of the festival, these thousands of statues are then immersed in the oceans as part of the ritual which harms our nature, polluting it as the plaster isn’t environmentally friendly. This piece was inspired by this scenario of how we worship God and yet we try to destroy what he has made in these ways. The charcoal and chalk are to give the subject a stone/statue effect and to make it seem realistic. Additionally, I have torn apart pieces of Indian newspapers and applied a muddy brown colour with a palette knife for the background to suggest the waste that the statue is drowning in.
