About The Artwork

This painting is loosely based on an earlier image of the supermodel Kate Moss, turning the tables on her role as object of desire in a blatantly direct gaze which, despite retaining a degree of sensuality and provocation, could also be described as menacing or questioning. The neon tones of the title emblazoned above her like a crown evoke the brashness of Pop art, as well as the lurid colours of current-day fashion trends and pop culture. The sensuality of the creamy buttery yellow is a nod to Wayne Thiebauld's candy-coloured frosted cakes, alluding here to the similar way in which the image of woman is marketed as a consumer commodity. The title is an overt reference to the Catholic guilt and shame of the Adam and Eve story, but also to Moss's own very public drugs scandal and eventual comeback, revealing the hypocrisy of a fashion industry that notoriously supplies drugs and alcohol to underage models. The black and white drawing alludes to newspaper articles of the scandal that unfolded in the tabloids and questions the labelling of women as saints, sinners, etc. The eventual outcome serves to demonstrate how the way women are portrayed in the media once again becomes a marketing strategy. From saint to sinner and back again.

I am a London-born self-taught painter working with a variety of subject matter ranging from sensual renditions of tropical fruits to conceptual Pop paintings and portraits, as well as more abstract work focusing on colour and light. The themes of desire, sensuality, and the exotic and erotic, are all constants in my work, as are the use of irony and humour.
