About The Artwork

This painting was created as part of a series of paintings of the Northern Lights as seen from Canada. The series of paintings functions as a graphic novel of sorts, with characters shown travelling from one canvas to the next in a journey across Canada from Ontario to British Colombia. The narrative was inspired by a real life romance between two people who meet in the middle of the painting series, which happens to be this painting. The scene is inspired by an alpine lake called Windfall Lake, which can be accessed by hiking near Tumbler Ridge, BC, Canada. When this painting is exposed to UV light, it glows, due to the fluorescent pigments used. Therefore, the Northern Lights appear to be truly glowing in the night sky. This series of paintings was exhibited at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery from October-November, 2022.

“My painting practice asks questions about human interaction with the land through outdoors leisure activities in a North American context.” Born in Vancouver in 1986, Richardson was raised in Erin, Ontario, with periods of time spent living in Australia and visiting the South Pacific as a child and teen. She obtained an HBA from Western University in London, Ontario in 2008, and an MFA from Goldsmiths, University of London, UK in 2013. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is held in private collections in Europe, North America and South Africa. She participated in the Joya: arte + ecología / AiR residency program in Spain in 2013 and the Life Collection Artist Exchange program in Johannesburg, South Africa in 2014. She participated in a mural painting project for the Redbull Amphiko Festival in Soweto, Johannesburg in 2014. She spent four years as a faculty member in the Fine and Performing Arts department at Nipissing University in North Bay, Ontario, and during this period she was also Curator at the WKP Kennedy Gallery. She recently relocated to the Peace Region in Northeastern British Columbia to focus on her art making practice full time, and is currently preparing for a solo exhibition at the Dawson Creek Art Gallery in October, 2022.
