The seductive power of Buddhist mandalas and the sacred aura of halos offer an immediate allusion and access into Rim’s work. Her time in East Asian and Southeast Asian Buddhist countries and her experience visiting schools where Buddhist thangka art is made has also influenced Rim’s understanding of the legacy of artistic practice, where younger artists establish the ground for the work and masterful painters add the final flourishes to complete the work. Rim cites this respect for cultural artistic lineage as an element of her own process.

Jean Rim’s paintings are very physical. Inspired by the energetic nourishing potential of art, she incorporates crystals and flowers into her work. Inspired by Mandalas, Chakras and Altars, Rim references nature directly, and at times symbolically by making fish scales-like carved marks on painting surfaces symbolizing the Little Mermaid’s loss for her transition to land, as an analogy to the immigrant experience.
