About The Artwork

My grandma inspired this painting. The Model T- Ford car was popular in her time, though she didn't own one. My mom playfully called her Iya Ojo, an endearing way of describing homely people from Ibadan (also called Ara Oke -people of the mountains). Ibadan is located in SouthWest Nigeria. They are of the Yoruba tribe. Grandma was not from Ibadan, But she prefered that style. She liked to leave the end of her wrapper trailing much lower than the hem of the rest of the wrapper. That way she could strategically place the trailing end between her legs when she sits to cook or bathe a child when sitting on a low stool. Ibadan women working on their farms pulled up that long end and tucked under and between their thighs over their buttocks into the tight folds.... so it resembled a pair of shorts. Dedicated to women who know how to care for their cars. To women who are more than they are perceived. Oil on canvas with delicate brush strokes. I will ship the original in a tube.
