About The Artwork

This is a haunting picture with figures to the left and right of the main face in the middle. The ethnicity of the man in the center is what I call Mongol. The process of this picture like the four before it is a texture painting. The undercoat is black acrylic paint mixed with sand and blending medium. The topcoat is the picture you see. What is haunting about the picture are the figures to the left ear and right ear. The right ear shows a man’s head who is very much of the 19th century American or British. His head floats. At the left ear of the man in the portrait are expressionistic figures who seem to be coming out of flames. They have scared and frightened faces which seem to blend into the left ear. And to be honest I’m not sure what this picture means, but there is a subconscious subtext that I did not plan intentionally. I am open to others’ interpretation of this picture. And like all of my canvases the sides of the frame are painted black and it is wired and ready to hang.

My name is Carl Bowlby and I live in Western MA, The Berkshires, in the USA. I have been painting all my life but not "officially" until I took my first formal painting course in 1992 at New York University in NYC. I am a single father to a lovely 21-year-old daughter who is my love and inspiration. I hope you enjoy my work and see a place for it in your collection and on your walls! Thank you Saatchi Art and those art lovers who are always the backbone of any artist's ambitions.
