About The Artwork

TourDeFrance : Monster Climb The intent of this piece is to resemble a monster of a mountain and racers conquering it. This started off as an abstract on top of an abstract that went bad. This means there was a previous painting underneath, providing texture for the new. I completely covered the old with a neutral grey background. I started creating a new abstract, and somehow I had France on my mind. I used to bike 2 hrs daily when I was younger (somewhere in the 25-35 years old range). I would bike North of where I lived to visit my Cousin and his family. It always helped to have a destination, and to be riding through more rural areas. So combine all that and somehow the image developed…. I wasn’t sure how to add the riders without taking too much away from the monster. So I worked out a couple of ideas on the computer, and after 3 different attempts I liked the lighter bikes with France flag coloured riders. I am amazed at the racers in the Tour de France, but I wouldn’t want to be one of them. Too much “traffic”. I never raced, because I didn’t want to loose the enjoyment of free riding. The pressure to win would have killed all enjoyment..

Art to me, is just a subset of the rest of life. A balancing act between working hard and challenging yourself and having fun with the outcomes. Art usually reveals the inner workings of the artist. For me I have quite a wide range of interests and subject matter that I want to “cover”. I like experimenting with mediums, and even pushing the boundaries a bit. But I also like to go back to basics and compare myself to other classics, to gauge my abilities. I LOVE art, because of the mysterious way it moves us and evokes all sorts of emotions. I love trying to find that magical element that turns an abstract into something we like. Why do we like it? Why do we like those colours? Why do our tastes differ? Solving and manipulating these dilemma's is part of the fun. What makes a great painting of nature. I think the answer to these questions is elusive and changes with time. My tastes in art have refined since I have become an artist, and started to ask questions... My art represents my interests. So my subjects are the "usual ones", but maybe with a focus on nature, sports, and movement. This is evolving (with my push into abstracts), and I am not sure where it will lead, but that is the fun part…. I hope the viewers enjoy and maybe even support my efforts. Thank you for viewing.
