About The Artwork

I am a swimmer. I learned to swim with my father in the ocean. I am from the coast and I have that relationship with the water that is nurturing, soothing, cleansing etc. I also meditate since I was in my 20s. And I have always used marihuana, on and off, for calming anxiety and feeling at easy with my body. Flamenco dancing came later in life and I embraced it like it was my country. Gitana siempre. But, painting is above all, my main medicine and so I wanted to put all together, very ambitiously, in this portrait of myself. I think the main ideas or resources that i have compiling in my images include these graphical designs, abstractions, or doodles, that work as a collage with the classical techniques of the body. The body that sometimes has fantastic mutations into animals or flowers as you can see in her left foot contrast the flamenco dancing shoe. The shoe as the link to migrations, the walking moving dancing migrating past of mine. This combination is what puts my work in the latin american postmodern fantasy with its Borgean qualities. If you care about this legacy, you can read my thesis in Spanish at posgradocristinalopezcasas.blogspot.com

I am interested in experimenting with sincretic images that capture the whole range of religious experiences. I am inspired by the architecture and mural paintings of the Aztecs, Mayan, Zapotecan and other peoples from America and I like to intersect them with the aesthetics brought to America by the Spanish, like virgins, saints and holy beings. I intersect them with a third paradigm which is my personal journey into Indian philosophies and the idea of enlightenment. The result shows where I am now, believing that art is the way, and being an artist is my religion.
