This is a painting I made in my studio in Lowell, MA in October 2017. It is painted on raw canvas which I worked on while it was loose (un-stretched) on my work table and stretched afterwards so that the composition wraps around the edges of the canvas. I've used a variety of media and techniques in creating this composition. The first layer is done in high flow acrylic paint dripped onto the canvas which I had primed by spraying with water and working the water into the canvas with a silicone sculpting tool. This causes the wet canvas to pull the paint into its matrix of fibers creating a died effect with subtle gradients, such as you can see in the magenta area in the center top of this painting. There are several layers of painting on top of this base, including doodles in paint marker, both oil based and enamel based. Some of the thin red lines are done in an oil based paint marker which pushes up through layers of acrylic painted on top of it and causing it to change color slightly, such as bit of text written near the center of the painting slightly towards the upper right corner, where it says "never a dull moment," which became the title of this piece. Some of the turquoise, pink, and yellow is done in an enamel based paint marker. The bold red and yellow swaths of color are created by spreading heavy body cadmium based acrylics onto the painting with the silicone sculpting tool, somewhat like spreading frosting over a cake. This paint is super opaque and has a real nice pop to it. The final layers are done with pigmented high flow and fluid acrylics applied to self leveling acrylic gel and acrylic pouring medium, which I have poured onto the canvas and manipulated with the silicone tool to both spread the mixtures around and to care out areas to let the background show through. I'm working with the tension between the subtle emptiness of the raw canvas and canvas that is just barely touched by a hint of color, such as in the upper left, and areas of raw power and energy with a chaotic turmoil of different types of shape and line swirling about each other like in the middle and lower right. This is a beautiful painting that I find myself drawn into again and again. I have had it hanging in my studio for the past few weeks and it has been an inspiration for work that I have done since finishing it.
