Nocturne Sept.29,2015 oil on canvas 16x20" My paintings of late have been pure improvisation. Instead of looking at a source photo or developing from a sketch I'm simply making marks and allowing the process to unfold. This dance of discovery is why I make art in general; to reveal or externalize something which is beyond intention or rational thought...This one started with a figure in an interior. Then, on the wall behind her a painting which became a chalkboard with numbers and equations implying the figure had some figuring to do. The metafictional painting within the painting took over the painting itself and sprawled beyond it's cloister overtaking the figure in a tsunami of black and white brushstrokes until the room gave way to a field and the field was paved over and the city was razed on its scorched earth.... I'm inspired by being out at night in the shadow cast by the day's events, I love things lit up against the dark sky and the noir drama behind windows.
