About The Artwork

This work belongs to a collection of mixed media drawings on paper, all part of a project I have named "The Book of Hours". Inspired by the medieval books containing images and texts aimed to help people transcend their sufferings through prayer and meditation on those images and texts, I create a body of a contemporary, transcultural Book, sourcing inspiration from Byzantine art, eastern mandalas and yantras, the Egyptian Book of the Dead and numerous other traditions where images were used to invoke good fortune, prosperity or communion with higher states of existence. This octagonal star stands for many things symbolically, and especially has references to the Hod sephirot, as known in Kabbalah. According to wikipedia :"Hod (Hebrew הוד howd "majesty, splendour, glory"[1]) is the eighth sephira of the Kabbalistic Tree of Life. Hod sits below Gevurah and across from Netzach in the tree of life; Yesod is to the south-east of Hod. It has four paths, which lead to Gevurah, Tiphereth, Netzach, and Yesod. All the sephirot are likened to different parts of the body, and Netzach and Hod are likened to the two feet of a person i.e. the right and left foot. The feet are usually only the means for a person's activity. While the hands are the main instrument of action, the feet help bring a person to the place where he wishes to execute that action" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hod_(Kabbalah))
