About The Artwork

The original oil painting "Osiris" by Jason Rafferty. The media is oil and metal leaf on on hand-prepared chalk ground panel, and it measures 18 x 24", 22 x 28" including the frame. It was painted in Asheville, NC, US by Jason Rafferty. This painting is part of a series of contemporary mythological narrative paintings titled "Mythic Images". Osiris is the ancient Egyptian god of life, death and the afterlife. Here the figure of Osiris is portrayed bearing a deer skull and a magic wand with an onyx stone. He gazes at the viewer directly. He is surrounded by an ethereal, abstracted pictorial space, with a metal leaf border creating an oval tondo. Thick impasto paint is layered over the metal leaf, obscuring its sheen in some areas while preserving it in others. The result is a luminous effect that is particularly pronounced in low light. It is a luminous, subtle painting, with delicate rendering of drapery and figure.  The piece comes with a beautiful custom wooden frame hand-picked by the artist. It is a black frame with silvery-gray textural accents that reflect well with the style of the painting.  The painting is created on hand-prepared chalk ground panel, a substrate comprised of masonite sealed with traditional hide glue and chalk gesso ground hand-prepared by the artist in the method used by the old masters for traditional panel painting. This time-tested surface is amongst the most archival available for contemporary fine art painting.  Jason uses the finest quality oil paints and constructs his paintings archivally, with longevity in mind. He is scrupulous with quality checking, and is focused on delivering you a quality piece of art that can be enjoyed for generations.
