About The Artwork

I'm a live performance painter, a musician, and an ex lawyer. The equal skill at art and music make me like Ronnie Wood. ‘Trans-Genre’. Being female and with a 20 year career in law ‘adjourned’ make me ‘Threatening’. I don’t intend to be. My artistic journey is about compassion. When my generosity wasn’t reflected back, and I saw only the ugly face of envy and spite, I became The Saxoffender. When PJ Harvey was coming to Adelaide, I painted this as a tribute to her humanitarian activities in war torn Balkan countries and her amazing talent. It’s a large painting, and the ornate frame makes it quite heavy, even though the surface is plumbers’ coreflute, a light, plastic product plumbers use to fill holes. Hence that crack on the right hand side of the artwork. Being a live performance artist, I work on light, bendable materials, so I can get out of the way fast. I wanted to present my art gift to PJ Harvey, before her show, around sound check time or something that suited the show. We both play sax. I was keen to find out if she had any ideas on how best to use the dual abilities without alienating people. I have two skills that I want to use. It doesn’t mean I’m a multitalented, limelight stealing arsehole. It was naive to have those ideas about soundcheck attendance, conversations, direction. I was lucky that her agent replied to my emails at all. As to my Artgift, the answer was “leave it at the box office”. My painting isn’t a box of chocolates. I declined to comply with that direction. I kept the painting, and turned it into a work about cervical cancer awareness. “Pull Down Your PJs, At Cervical Cancer. Doesn’t matter if you’re rich and famous; no one wants to be rich and squamous. Get the old girl checked under the bonnet at your local Cervix Station. Early Detection might save your life. Pants Down, PJ.” (One of my aliases from law days is Pants Downey). If someone says to PJ Harvey ‘hey, that was brave of you, to be the face of cervical cancer! My friend took your advice, was tested, abnormal changes noted, and had surgery, just in time!’ then the Saxoffender has done everyone a favour. Right? Life Imitating Art. That is how the Saxoffender has to play the game, when everyone’s too big to say thanks for the gift of art. I’d still donate part proceeds from the sale of this painting or prints of it, or prints made with the cervical cancer awareness message, to the major cancer organisation or hospital dealing with cervical cancer nearest the purchaser. My approach to rockstars regularly has an underlying element of satire. My approach to cancer never does.

I am known as The Saxoffender. I specialise in the Art of Rock’n’Roll. Every work I paint, has an underlying musical theme, or a track, that goes with it. For example, my painting of Robert Plant is about rockstar privacy, and how people with intensely public images, deal with tragedy in their personal lives. The title of the painting is “Three Black Dogs Called Saxoffender. Portrait of Robert Plant.” I learned three versions of Led Zeppelin’s iconic track ‘Black Dog’, on saxophone, while I was painting Mr Plant. That includes Jimmy Page’s guitar solos. Buy the painting, you get the performance, if you want. :) Every piece of art I finish has an ultimate humanitarian objective. I try to apply part proceeds of everything creative projects I do, somehow, to social causes. My primary areas have been Prostate Cancer Awareness, World Suicide Prevention, and the Prevention Of Cruelty Against Animals. So if you buy a piece of art by The Saxoffender, you are entitled to an additional feel good buzz. You are helping make the World a better, more compassionate, place. Crusading for Compassionate Causes I thought would be appealing to people. But in my home town of Adelaide, South Australia, the opposite seems to have occurred. So I live as a recluse, I don’t advertise my work, I don’t play sax with a band; I just keep working, and communicating with icons I respect, via Instagram. Those icons are the ones who have retained their modesty and compassion in spite of incredible fame. Rob Halford, of Judas Priest, Lady Gaga, Tommy Henriksen, of the Hollywood Vampires, and Johnny Depp are my “snow leopards”. Exquisite, valuable, highly sought after, shy, and endangered. The danger arises from the enormous fan bases they have, and the delight celebrity media take in reporting negative press about them. So they are extremely elusive. My journey therefore, and my perception that they are listening through the communication portal created by Instagram, could be my imagination. I gambled everything I have; my law career, my status, my finances, my health, my social contacts, my future, on my creative mission one day, working out. To date, it has been a financial catastrophe. I lost everything. Trying to help people avoid dying the same ways that Frank Zappa and Chris Cornell did. But taking the creative gamble has also saved my life. If I were still a depressed barrister, I wouldn’t be here now.
