There's an odd, wonderful kind of light on late summer afternoons along the river valleys of northwestern New Mexico. I've never seen it anywhere else, and from watching other artists respond to it, I know it's really there. Somehow the red-golden hills seem more amber and mysterious, the greens burn like emeralds, and even the humblest roadside shrubs become magical. 'Palisade' was painted in acrylic on cotton canvas, from watercolor sketches I'd made years before. This version was primarily done in palette knife and silicone-tipped scrubbers, with an underpainting of thick parallel ridges of gesso. Layers of acrylic paint float in a slow-dry acrylic medium to mimic a marbling effect. Soft interference blue and purple overglaze the sky and vegetation. Because it was worked on a commercially stretched canvas, then removed, the selvage is 3.25", with a 1" matching teal border.

I create art under the name Marian Crane (go ahead, I'm immune to the inevitable jokes because I adore Hitchcock movies.) I write and blog under the names Crane Hana, M. Crane Hana, and M. C. Hana (but they're all me, really.) I was born in northwestern New Mexico, and grew up surrounded by the spectacular landscapes, colors, and cultural blends of the American Southwest. My mixed-media paintings, fiber collages, wearable art, jewelry, and book art sculptures are inspired by my love of history, science, folk art, myth, and invention. I am fascinated with the human tendency to mix ornament and function. Since I’m a theatrical prop and artifact geek, too, I love making objects that appear as if they came out of a ‘real’ fantasy or science-fiction culture.
