About The Artwork
This is a large acrylic painting with collage. This was one of my title pieces from my BFA thesis where I tried to break my preconceived conceptions as well as boundaries. (I was raised catholic and have always found myself yearning for the black and white. The definite.) The idea of painting with text was like a shot through my heart. Who would need to do such a thing? Text belongs in a book and paintings need nothing other than a surface. As you can see I no longer feel this way. I began by writing words and then covering those words as well as leaving tape, patterned paper and slabs of paint until what you get is a work questioning space. I like that it is disorienting to look at and it is difficult to tell which is front and which is back but there is definite space.
