About The Artwork
Persephone, queen of the underworld in Greek mythology, is shown here at the moment when I imagine she returns each year to Hades to uphold her destiny. This explained the beginning of winter for the Greeks, as she was described as the goddess of spring's bounty. I hope viewers feel the despair and coldness in her demeanour and take a moment to sit with her. This painting has been made with oil on acid-free, Georgian art board. The choice of medium is deliberate as I like how the oil is assimilated by this support and gets imprinted in it. Inspired on a digital image by Lin Ran.
