About The Artwork

Subject: Santuario del Cerro San Cristóbal, Santiago, Chile Description: This painting captures the majesty and power of La Virgen at the Santuario del Cerro San Cristóbal, the highest point in the city. The serene and watchful expression on her face suggests a sense of protection and guardianship over the city below. The lush vegetation that flanks the processional stair leading up to the sculpture creates a vibrant and organic contrast to the hard lines of the structure. In the background, an imposing antennae serves as a technological altar to the sacred statue. The painting depicts the seamless integration of man-made and natural elements in the urban development of Santiago, and raises questions about our current relationship with technology, religion, and nature. Exhibitions: Painting included in the 2023 Landscape: Savage and Serene show at the MVA Gallery. Process: Plein-air drawing, painted in studio.
