About The Artwork

Below a hillock Sat in an onion field Content fat red goat On a Friday in June, the artist packed up painting equipment and set off from South Scarle on foot without any plans of where to paint. After searching for nearly an hour, a hillock overlooking an onion field was discovered, that lent some aerial perspective to the flat fields of Nottinghamshire. The painting shows the distant rooftop outline of South Scarle in the east midlands of England with an untethered goat happily chewing through onions. ‘Red Goat’ is a post-impressionist (divisionalism) painting using the palette of the Impressionists to apply outlines. An overall colour harmony relied on an instinctive palette selection tending towards a chord of Green. A traditional blue-grey contour is used to define an object but to maintain colour harmony; the contrast of this blue-grey is used on the light side of an object. For example, the nearest tree has light yellow on the left side and the goat has yellow around the traditional outline. This gave a brighter intense and harmonious image.

John A B Lansdown was brought up in the Lakelands of Cumbria, England, making him a landscape painter. After saying goodbye to his economics degree and the offices of England in 2006, he has worked in the art city of Plovdiv in Bulgaria and from 2011 became a member of the Plovdiv artists union. He has attended several symposiums in Bulgaria and also had the luck to be invited to the 2009 Atelier an der Donau symposium in Pochlarn, Austria celebrating Oskar Kokoshka who was born there. He won an honourary prize in the painting category (More information can be found at www.atelieranderdonau.at) His works fall into three periods. While risking pneumonia to capture the subtle greys of the British climate, he developed an en-Plein-air working technique that developed into an impressionist style. This style has recently become so intense that he has termed this new style and colour "Distilled Light". By further intensifying the palette of the Impressionists, he can produce very intense compositions that harmonise with the shimmer of the Bulgarian sun. The change is dramatic when you compare the subtle mist of his English oil paintings with the radiance of his recent Bulgarian and Austrian works. As well as studying for an art degree in Cork, he studied violin making at the famous Newark School of Violin Making in Newark, Nottinghamshire. The violin-making course gave him a disciplined skill and a longing to make things of fine quality.
