About The Artwork

Fikret Mualla is a renowned Turkish expressionist painter. Gümüş gave a lot of space to his art in her thesis. She believes that this artist is a valuable expressionist with existential and vital efforts in his art. Despite the pains, we see the lively and cheerful colors of life in his paintings. In his biography, Fikret Mualla writes the following lines to a friend: "I couldn’t find a warm home in Istanbul or Paris. These lines inspired Göknil Gümüş Sungurtekin to make this painting. She made this painting out of respect for this great artist. Maybe she couldn’t give him a house, but she could give him an imaginary street painting where Semiha Berksoy’s opera opened. This painting tells about Fikret Mualla’s loved ones, what happened in his life, or what he saw, and his longing for his childhood. This work is an expression of her respect for the master as a young expressionist artist. In the painting, we see a figure symbolizing Fikret Adil, a friend of Fikret Mualla, wearing a yellow coat and bringing him his favorite wine and red carnations. The famous painter Fikret Mualla was kicked out of the Le Dôme Café when he couldn’t pay his bill. We often see balloons, monkeys, and families in his paintings. They all express his longing for his childhood in Moda, Istanbul, especially for his mother who died of the Spanish flu. The portrait we see in the background is hanging on the opera wall dedicated to his platonic lover Semiha Berksoy. The ashtray is always full of cigarette butts… Clearly, Fikret Mualla always waited for Semiha Berksoy to love him not as a friend but as a lover. Those young women in the middle are Fikret Mualla’s imagine lovers, and these loves have never happened. The humorous woman on the right symbolizes Fikret Mualla’s ironic side, and the artist releases balloons for his childlike spirit on Fikret Mualla Street in Göknil Gümüş's imagination. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qw5fY9H2qw
