About The Artwork

Inspired by Sophocle's Tragedy,Oedipus at Colonus Oil on canvas,100X120cm Series:Greek Tragedians and Comedians Oedipus at Colonus In Oedipus at Colonus (Greek: Oidipous epi Kolōnō) the old, blind Oedipus has spent many years wandering in exile after being rejected by his sons and the city of Thebes. Oedipus has been cared for only by his daughters Antigone and Ismene. He arrives at a sacred grove at Colonus, a village close by Athens (and the home of Sophocles himself). There Oedipus is guaranteed protection by Theseus, the noble king of Athens. Theseus does indeed protect Oedipus from the importunate pleadings of his brother-in-law, Creon, for Oedipus to protect Thebes. Oedipus himself rejects the entreaties of his son Polyneices, who is bent on attacking Thebes and whom Oedipus solemnly curses. Finally Oedipus departs to a mysterious death; he is apparently swallowed into the earth of Colonus, where he will become a benevolent power and a mysterious source of defense to the land that has given him final refuge. The play is remarkable for the melancholy, beauty, and power of its lyric odes and for the spiritual and moral authority with which it invests the figure of Oedipus.

At "Synergy1973" organised by Glyn Hughes, who provided me with the canvas, I displayed my first painting,"Magic Moments" .Realising that as a painter to earn a living I had to conform, decided to go into the world of fashion (I studied Fashion design and Art at De Montfort Uni.) and paint when I was financially comfortable, so money would not dictate my Art.I operated a casual-wear co.using my own registered labels(Zapata,Rollers,Genesis) which I exported all over Europe. My base until 1999 was Cyprus. In 1999 I moved to Romania. In 2004 I sold my Fashion co. there ,returned to Cyprus and started creating a series of paintings. 1)Escape of the Gods,1973-2007(This work is presented in a book that I published in 2008) 2)Greek Tragedians and Comedians,2008-2015 3)Poetry meets Art,2016- 4)Small and spontaneous,2016- 5)Homo Erectus,2018- 6)Photo Art,2018- In my paintings I give my everything,I study the subject well and produce no more than ten works a year.
