Sacred Band Print

Inspired by Byzantine Fayum portraits. Bit of a strange one this. Not painted for exhibition, just an exercise (or perhaps an exorcism) purely for my own pleasure. The caricatures are drawn solely from memory. They are the faces of…well, let’s call them my brothers. All of whom I have loved in some way. Some I still do, some I always will. Some have faded somewhat from my life, some have disappeared without a trace, some are sadly no longer with us. But all, for one reason or another, have made an impact on my life and will live long in my memory. The title is taken from the Sacred Band of Thebes, a 4th Century military unit sometimes referred to as the Army of Lovers. Each of the portraits bears initials (in the Theban alphabet) that reveal the identity of the subject.
