About The Artwork

This is a portrait of myself during a depressive episode. I'm not one to cry in public, or talk about my problems, but more people need to learn about depression, what it is and most importantly, what it isn't: It isn't a mood, it isn't a parallel meaning to sadness or anger, it isn't lack of faith, it isn't a choice and it's not something you can snap yourself out of. It is however, a disease, an evil disease, deservingly called cancer of the soul; it claims lives, it devastates families and it's even more dangerous, because it knows how to hide and most of those affected by it make sure it stays hidden well. Depression is similar to drowning, particularly to the point where one knows they're definitely dying and that the water has already filled their lungs, no one can see you and no one can help...the moment of absolute despair and just hoping it all finishes quickly...that's depression. If you have a loved one who suffers from depression, please be there for them, not by pushing them or trying to force them to snap out of it, or by forcing them to take medicine they're not comfortable with...but by showing love and support, by ''suggesting'' medication if it's best for their condition, or mood elevating activities and sharing those activities with them...by telling them why they matter, what's great about them, how they touched your life, what's great about their past and what they can achieve in their future... by praying for them...and last but not least, by raising awareness about what they're going through...be their life jackets, until they reach the shore.
