Shri Yantra Print

This is drawing/painting is from a collection of mixed media drawings on paper, all part of a project I have named "The Book of Hours". Inspired by the medieval books containing images and texts aimed to help people transcend their sufferings through prayer and meditation on those images and texts, I create a body of a contemporary, transcultural Book, sourcing inspiration from Byzantine art, eastern mandalas and yantras, the Egyptian Book of the Dead and numerous other traditions where images were used to invoke good fortune, prosperity or communion with higher states of existence. The yantras are a particularly good example of protective images, usually associated with protective texts known as mantras. The Sri Yantra or Sri Chakra is a form of mystical diagram used in the Shri Vidya school of Hindu tantra. It consists of nine interlocking triangles that surround a central point known as a bindu. These triangles represent the cosmos and the human body. The Sri Yantra's 9 constituent triangles vary in size and shape and intersect to form 43 smaller triangles, organized in 5 concentric levels. Together they represent the totality of the cosmos and express Advaita or non-duality. In the middle, the power point (bindu) represents the cosmic center. The Sri Yantra represents the union of Masculine and Feminine Divine. The four upward-pointing isosceles triangles represent the goddess's masculine embodiment Shiva, while the five downward-pointing triangles symbolize the female embodiment Shakti. The worship of the Sri Yantra is central to the Shri Vidya system of Hindu worship. It represents the goddess in the form of Shri Lalita or Tripura Sundari, the beauty of the three worlds: Bhu Loka (Physical Plane, Consciousness of the Physical Plane), Bhuvar Loka (Antariksha or Intermediate Space Consciousness of the Prana) and Swar Loka (Svarga or Heaven or Consciousness of the Divine Mind).
