One of the joys of painting in the southwest is the beauty and uniqueness of the plant life of this region. The Clindropuntia Cholla (tree cholla, cane cholla, walking stick cholla, chain-link) is found in Northern Mexico, and Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and other aired parts of the world. One might consider it to be one of the ugliest of cacti particularly since it seems not to have a given direction of growth. However, its beauty is easily seen against a black background, as I have demonstrated in “Stickers”. The chollas yellow fruit becomes its attraction once the purple or magenta flowers fall away. The technical achievement in this piece was to create brilliant results on a black background. Enjoy, and don't get stuck!
