About The Artwork

Streedagh Beach is on the Atlantic Coast of County Sligo in Ireland. The land is wild and unspoilt and the weather here is changeable. In 1588 three ships from the Spanish Armada perished on the rocky outcrops as they tried to navigate to safety around the coast. I was born in Sligo in 1967 and I have always been drawn to the numerous coastal beaches and cliffs. I played golf on the many links courses that wind through the dunes. This scene shows horses, from a local riding school, trotting through the wild surf. The dark sky reminds us of the dangers at sea but on the mainland there is always a warm place to dry off after some bracing activity. My favourite memory of creating this painting is working on the dunes. I always looked at them in the wind and thought of how they resemble the shape and movement of the waves. This is what I hoped to recreate in this painting. Although this piece is quite dark the colours will shine back through the layers of glaze when well lit - to recreate the atmosphere of a typical Irish day!

I was born in Sligo, Ireland in 1967. I now live with my family in South Bohemia, Czech but I also return regularly to Sligo to be with my father and to enjoy the Atlantic coastline. I paint in both locations. I have worked in over 30 countries overseas mostly in challenging emergency and humanitarian environments. I have had discs removed in my neck and lower back and due to nerve issues I must now paint with my right wrist and arm in a fixed brace. But painting is my physical and mental therapy and it gives me much joy to share my art with you.
