With this piece i sought to capture a familiar scene in true abstraction- reducing the natural and man-made elements down to their simplest forms, textures and colors. The sky is rendered with minimal color variation; the utility lines in simple silhouette; the greenery with heavy application of paint, giving the piece dimension and texture. This draws from elements of pop art, illustration, color field and expressionism. I think often about the tension between the human-made world and the natural world. We often find beauty in both and celebrate where they are integrated - think of an urban park or rooftop garden, a cabin in the woods or sculpture garden. Yet we also think of our structures as spoiling a natural landscape. This is not a piece about environmentalism, though I hope to evoke some thought to our place in the natural world. However, there is something worth considering in the fact of our habitation and the things necessary to our society.
