Tatanka is the American Indian name for the bison. Symbol of Providence, was believed to be a gift from God (Wakan tanka) to the tribes. The buffalo was the main source of food, shelter and clothing (skin), instruments and tools (bones) for the American natives. It was nearly exterminated in the 19th century as result of habitat loss due to the expansion of farming in North America, industrial-scale hunting practised by non-indigenous hunters and cases of deliberate policy by settler governments to destroy the food source of the native Indian peoples during times of conflict.
