About The Artwork

This painting is the second largest and most recent in a series that spans 3 decades. It was inpired by Arthur Rimbaud's "Le Bateau Ivre" or "The Drunken Boat". It is also related to my series of works about Astronaut Spacewalks. In my version, the boat does not ride upon the water's surface (as in Rimbaud's poem) but is sunken underwater, submerged. It is about the transcendence inherent in depth. This depth may result from work, endeavor, thought, perspicacity, passion, faith, pursuit, sensuality. It relates the poetry of transformation and pays homage to both Rimbaud and all human accomplishment while placing humanity in Nature's cosmos.
