About The Artwork

"The Family Ghost", 2015 - acrylic on fiberboard (with traces of charcoal sketch still visible in places), 45 x 60 cm. Every family has its ghosts. Some are struggling to escape, held by our unwillingness to let go of the past; others are trapped by their own connections to a previous existence, waiting for a bit of encouragement before they can take flight into the next phase of their existence. This painting relies on only two colors, Payne's Gray and Titanium White, the monochrome effect emphasizing the sense that the figure is not quite real, transparent to his background. Note: These pieces owe a nod of thanks to Italian photographer Tina Modotti (1896-1942) who also explored the expressive potential of the image of the human hand.

Born in Montgomery, Alabama, and raised in the rural Appalachian foothills of the northeastern part of the state, my childhood was surrounded by the natural world, the rigid social and cultural traditions of the deep South, the distant rumblings of 1960's social changes, and the panoramas of human existence revealed to me through reading, music and art. Most of my adult life has been spent working as a graphic designer in Birmingham, South Florida, and Dallas -- primarily in the television industry -- where I was immersed yet another hybrid universe, a fun-house world of ego, transitory celebrity, and social manipulation. These days I live and work in a cabin on the edge of the Ozark National Forest in northwest Arkansas, decompressing.
