About The Artwork

The inspiration came from the Beatles. When I listened to The Fool on the Hill, the image appeared. Suddenly I understood how to express the music on the paper: Day after day, alone on a hill The man with the foolish grin is sitting perfectly still Nobody wants to know him They can see that he's just a fool But he never gives an answer But the fool on the hill Sees the sun going down And the eyes in his head See the world spinning round... I hope the viewer will feel joy and happiness thanks to the fool on the hill. I hope the viewer will think about Ryokan, a quiet and eccentric Zen Buddhist monk. He was originally ordained as Ryokan Taigu. Ryo means "good", kan means "broad", and Taigu means "great fool". Ryokan Taigu would thus translate as "broad-hearted generous fool", referring to qualities that Ryōkan's work and life embodies.
