The Golden Bough is a 30x30x1.5 inches contemporary oil painting of an oak tree and a deer in an autumn forest clearing. The painting was created by weaving and layering lots of paint layers in a semi abstract art nouveau style using pale yellows, orange, violets and pinks which give an intriguing glimpse into the heart of a forest. A female deer stands guarding her tree which is an ancient oak matriarch of the forest. The Oak, who has golden leaves, knows exactly what is going on in her wood and has tracked every movement by man and beast over centuries. The painting was inspired by the fact that oak trees and deer do, in fact, have a mystery to them. You always wonder what they would tell you if they would talk. I like the idea of worlds beyond the mundane and have used veils of paint to hint at possible mysteries or fairy tales being revealed. I painted it at this time (Sept 2019) as it is the end of summer and beginning of autumn and it is a palpable change in nature that prompts walks in forests and musings about the stories they could tell :-) Painted on deep edge canvas, white edges, ready to hang. Gill Bustamante is a professional artist based in East Sussex who creates large semi-abstract landscape, seascape and wildlife paintings in oil on canvas. Her painting style is very distinct and often fuses art-nouveau, impressionist and semi-abstract techniques with traditional portraiture that reflect her love of nature, animals, birds and the flora and fauna of the landscapes around her. She loves the ancient landscapes of England and her paintings often reflect the magical elements that such landscapes have. Gill’s main working method has been the development of a painting style she terms ‘memory impressionism’. This method involves going walking somewhere, looking at and absorbing the things she sees and experiences, and then returning home to her studio to try and capture an echo or essence of the place from memory - including any wildlife she may have seen. By this method, she captures precise moments in times at different seasons and the feeling she has about them. Gill completed a fine art degree in Brighton in 1983 and has painted since she was three. In her own words: “Painting always makes me happy along with cake, bunnies, driving erratically, BBC 6 music and totally irreverent comedy”.
