My father worked in the Indian Railways all his life. I grew up on trains, watching the Indian countryside roll by, sometimes in harsh sunshine and sometimes by soft moonlight. Stations were fascinating, with the hustle-bustle of a sea of faces and people - chai-wallahs or tea sellers clinking glasses of hot chai in wire carriers, snack vendors melodiously calling out their wares in loud sing-songs, magazine stalls vendors, bustling passengers intently rushing about the platforms, and their coolies hurrying along next to them, with impossibly tall piles of suitcases balanced on their heads, and heavy bags slung on each arm. These men were so thin, with sun-darkened skins and strong, sinewy bodies - subsisting on too little food and enduring too much physical exertion. Every day for them was back breaking and long. Yet they accepted their fate without question. "I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself." - D. H. Lawrence The passengers boarding the trains and hiring the coolies never look in their eyes or at their faces. The red shirts make them invisible. This painting honors these men.
