Inspired by the image of Stefania Mastrocinque, mother of Irene Grazioli, the movie actress of Mediteranneo (1991) -- La Figlia di Camillo Mastrocinque, Stefania -- but the pose of the model is one of defiant determination. The first version of this theme was exhibited Mayor's Show for Eugene, OR where the artist lives and works. It was selected by the Mayor of Eugene at the time, Jim Torrey (1997–2004) for "the Mayor's Prize." He explained why he selected this work: one time while traveling with his mother and a black friend into Eastern Oregon and Idaho, they were refused service at a cafe just across the border in Idaho. His mother assumed the pose of the figure in the painting and refused to budge until the cafe agreed to serve them.
