My enduring fascination with the mysteries of the oceans. Whilst on holiday in Scotland we went on a sea safari from Oban. We were lucky enough to see many creatures, from Puffins and Eagles to Seals and many more. However the focus of the trip was an attempt to see Minke Whales which had been spotted in the area. For 4 hours we peered across the cold grey glassy sea for a sight of the huge sea mammal. Once or twice one of us let out an excited cry as we thought we caught a glimpse if something beneath the waves. At one point I thought something swam past just below the surface.... We never saw a whale but I was struck, as I always am, by the meeting of two worlds at the sea surface. The sea hiding it's secrets beneath a glassy reflective skin. We couldn't see the life below. But could the life below be watching us? Were the Minke Whales, and others, aware of us and if so, what were they thinking? I love the mystery of the sea and am always a little scared by it. It is not our world and we are uncomfortable visitors there, needing sophisticated technology just to survive. I wanted to paint a picture that communicated this ambiguous and mysterious relationship between the two worlds and their spectacularly different inhabitants.

My work is primarily figurative – landscapes, portraits and narrative paintings in oil, acrylic and gouache. I never tire of the challenge of rendering a subject in a ‘realistic’ manner whilst at the same time weaving in a story, mood and personality to the piece. In the more narrative compositions, I have attempted to invite the viewer to construct the ‘story’ in their own minds from the content of the picture. My portraits seek by use of pose, composition, colour and tone to give an understanding of the subject’s character beyond the physical likeness. In my landscapes I like to convey the atmosphere and mood of the environment, so the viewer ‘feels’ as much as ‘views’. I work in my garden studio in Kingston on Thames, and my work can be viewed at ricksmithart.webnode.com
