The first time I heard the buzzing sound of a Vespa scooter was when I returned to Europe after finishing high school in Toronto in the mid-sixties. I'll never forget that first impression. Having lived in Europe for 10 years after that, these modes of transportation became a common sight. Thinking back on my youth, retro imagery of the fifties and early sixties resonates with me and over the years has become the subject of many paintings. This particular work incorporates realism superimposed onto an abstract background to enhance the focus onto the subject. It belongs to my whimsical series.

I would describe my works as a kind of visual poetry or music expressed in colour, form, rhythm and design.... from light and playful to moody and dark. The works span a diverse range of styles and subject matter; abstracting architecture or whimsical expressive 'dreamscapes' to (shown here soon) quirky urban realism and revisiting retro themes like vintage cars, scooters, bikes, old store fronts, etc. I often like to juxtapose and layer imagery over an imagined background. Explorations of shifting realities in space, simplicity in complexity, harmony in dissonance, expressions of joy and wonder.
