About The Artwork

This mixed media painting on wood panel began as a collage from clippings from two Vogue magazines. This painting focuses on the “gaze” of the subjects in art and compares it to the similar gaze from models. This makes the viewer think about what each represents, and also how they feel when they look at a painting with all of the eyes on them. I wanted to include all types of female models that were featured in Vogue, where the only thing they had in common was that they are all staring into the camera/at the viewer.

Isabelle Halmos is a Drawing and Painting student at OCAD University, completing her Bachelor degree in Fine Arts in Toronto where she was born and raised. Having been raised in an artistic household, she decided she would be following her father, the graphic design artist Jeff Halmos, in his footsteps to pursue her passion. Her first commission was in senior kindergarten and had many throughout her elementary, high school, and university careers. Her attention to detail gained from years of photorealistic commissioned sketch work is apparent as she to turns photographs into drawings or paintings. Her current work focuses on issues of body and gender as well as sexual assault/harassment which she achieves through paintings and installation work. Her work is mostly figurative, only having recently combined her hyper-realism with abstract painting. As well as aiming to becoming a practicing visual artist, her goal is to become an art restorer and conservationist for private and public art collections.
