This striking looking Australian native honeyeater, the Noisy Miner (Manorina melanocephala) caught my attention as a worthy subject for several reasons. Firstly, I seek out beauty even in controversial subjects. In recent years it has been elevated as a pest as it is often mistaken for a real pest a brown/black bird called the Indian Myna, it has a communal nature so it feeds in groups, it is social and a chatterbox and it's territorial nature pushes out gentler bird species of feeding grounds. In contrast, it is strikingly beautiful with its yellow eye patch, yellow/orange beak and legs against cream/grey body with brown flecks, it's light/dark colouring balance and it has a diverse diet for honeyeaters as it seeks nectar as well as fruit, insects and even small reptiles. Admirably, young males help a breeding pair to feed young. I chose to portray its 'essence' would be best captured through a characteristic pose. One where it seems to be simultaneously caught off guard and arrogant or confident enough to feed without cautionary alertness to predators at the same time.
