This painting is inspired by the classic fairy tale of Snow White, based around the themes of youth and beauty being prized above all else. The wicked stepmother wants to be the fairest in the land and asks her mirror "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all", but the mirror replied that her stepdaughter is the fairest. Youth and beauty are still highly prized in our modern culture and the pressure on young girls to fit an idealized image of "beauty" can make young girls doubt their own image and worth. Painted in professional quality acrylic paints (Golden Open), on gesso-coated wood panel. Unframed (framed image is shown for illustrative purposes only). The panel can be framed in the same way as a stretched canvas, or in a tray frame with the edges of the panel exposed (as shown in example image). This work is part of a series of new works exploring fairy tales, and how they may still relate to our modern lives.

I am a figurative painter based in Edinburgh, Scotland. I'm inspired by everyday experience of life and especially people and nature. My paintings often focus on nature and the way people connect with the natural environment in our modern world, especially those of us living in cities and towns. I think about how important the environment is for all of us, and how the changing environment may affect our future lives. I record my ideas in sketches, photographs or plein air paintings, from which I often then develop larger works in the studio. I enjoy using the physicality and expressiveness of the materials - usually ink, acrylic paint or watercolour - to attempt to describe in visual language those strange or beautiful moments which always seem to elude capture in the written word. I am inspired by contemporary figurative artists such as Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas and Chantalle Joffe, but also by the Scottish tradition of painting including artists such as William Gillies and the Scottish Colourists, especially Cadell for his bold use of colour.
