About The Artwork

Currently on display at Saatchi & Saatchi in South Melbourne and framed in Tasmanian Oak, Zazen is a form and practise of meditation. A meditation of colour and space, painted in Bangkok early 2016 which has exhibited in Bangkok, Singapore, Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne and reviewed by Phil King in the UK. In 2016 I wrote about it: "zazen” Bangkok, Thailand, January 2016 1000 x 1000mm, acrylic on canvas It took 3 times to get the colours right and I expanded the palette in some ways, I also put in quite a few brush techniques but still learning and experimenting with paint depth and viscosity. I think at an emotional level, my mood comes out in the paintings, a friend asked when she saw it if I was in love, which I would be pretty happy to be able to convey rather than any tensions or manufactured emotions/symbols. Like ’nyorai’ and the other colour paintings from that year, I took a buddhist term for the painting - zazen is a form and practise of meditation, in some ways this painting for me could be a mandala. Maybe one of the last ones like this, but I planning a commission at the moment which will go quite Baker Overstreet but using the above elements. It is also an early Augmented Reality painting that moves and dances if viewed via a mobile phone.

I was born in Auckland, New Zealand but quickly left to explore the world. I didn’t get to study art at school, instead was told to learn mathematics, computer science and philosophy, which I did for many years until I found painting and technology. A constant theme throughout my life is art encounters - with a strange combination of this 'painting and technology'. I now 'paint' with acrylic, oil, enamel as well as Swift, Python, Xcode, After Effects, nodes, generative algorithms and now even Twitch. Each painting is a combination of canvas and code - using the same mathematical rhythms and structure. So far so good with this, 2019 was a big year with participation in exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou in Paris as well as locally here at the nation art gallery (AGNSW). 2020 is interesting...it started well with work as part of the Biennale of Sydney but then everything closed. I think this could be THE time for interactive artists and am busy in studio demonstrating what I mean :-)
