About The Artwork

This was conceived and created in a remote desert area at the social, economic and geographic margins of American life: Wonder Valley in California's Mojave Desert. The work considers, close-up, the incremental and gradual surrender of abandoned desert homesteads as they succumb to landscape processes such as desiccation, sun-bleaching, and scouring. The work reveals to us the final residue of human habitation, when all that can be scavenged has been taken away by still-active homesteaders to assist with household repairs and to upcycle into new forms. For an area with a mean income considerably below the national average it is an economic necessity to find utility value in another’s waste. This picture shows a metal door of an abandoned Mojave Desert homestead scuffed and streaked with corrosion.

I am a British visual artist, from London. My practise is primarily concerned with ideas relating to place, and place-making, mediated by time, memory and myth. My work is principally photographic, but I also make work with moving image, audio, book making and installation. My working process requires patient research of a site’s history, and repeated exploration of each location, an endeavour indelibly inscribed into the work. I was awarded the degree of Master of Arts in Photography and Critical Theory from the University of Brighton studying under luminaries such as Magnum photographer Mark Power. I graduated with Distinction. My work is collected internationally and exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Scottish Academy, Museum of London, Towner Gallery, and Somerset House.
