The Gift Print

Sympetrum sanguineum, Ruddy Darter brings a gift to photographer’s finger. This beautiful little friend came and landed on my hand no less than nine times during which I was spellbound. The last time it came to me, it brought a gnat and left it on my palm. The image is taken one-handed shooting with 100 2.8 lens. This image wa part of the collection, Icarus, which exhibited in Foto Skoda Prague in February 2011. The theme of Icarus deals with flight, aspiratiosn, escape and failure, death. This image stood in the 12:00 position at the top of the mosaic. A dragonfly like all insects goes through metamorphoses. Some remain in the pond for as long as 7years only to fly for a very short season. Others are annual . every species vary in development and habits. Unlike butterflies, dragonfles are not so often used as a symbol of flight or reincarnation or achievement. everybody knows about the ugly caterpillar that becomes the magnificent butterfly, but the early life of a dragonfly is hidden and usually secret. So I chose this image for the multiple interpretations it held to me in reference to the Icarus myth and the freedom it had to fly.
