About The Artwork

A boy in the Laotian highlands stands between boyhood and adolescence. “A bridge of silver wings stretches from the dead ashes of an unforgiving nightmare to the jeweled vision of a life started anew.” ― Aberjhani A bridge of the gods crossing to the other world symbolically illustrates the passage of the brave in numerous traditions, taking on many guises. The great felled Oak of Siberian tribes describes the milky way along which pass the souls of those "killed without sickness." In Chinese mythology the gods descend to earth on the 'Floating Bridge of Heaven' while the souls of Japanese mortals ascend to heaven upon the eight planks of the Buddhist bridge Yatsu-hashi. Thus the span of worlds is bridged by symbolic systems of thought and form.

If time is a mellifluous river, then photographs are the temporal stepping stones on which the viewer can stand, mid-flow in the present to look back upon the past. As a child I sat fascinated by my father’s photography of Africa, transported by the vast landscapes and intimate portraits, eyes that fluoresced and horizons that beckoned me forth. The power of photographs to take the viewer to a place of quiet contemplation was thus instilled in me from an early age. As a young man I set out to answer the challenge of those horizons. Drifting from culture to culture the relationship of my art to time becomes ever clearer, as does a growing sense of man’s disconnection from nature, its seasons and cycles, ultimately a disconnection from the self. Through my work, I seek to distill the essence of humanity and nature, from the boundless to the intimate. From the minutiae of man’s diaspora to the grandiose wilderness of our ever diminishing world.
